The Procedure

It is compulsory for patients to be at least 18 years of age to undergo the procedure. After the primary medical evaluation, the patient is administered a dose of anesthesia. The surgeon will then make an incision under the breasts, or under arms, or around the nipple-area.

The location of the incision depends on the type of implants, and the quantity of enlargement. The implants are placed into the pockets above or below the chest muscle. After the implants are placed, the surgeon seals the incisions with a surgical tape.

What are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are a common cosmetic procedure today. Women all across the world opt for breast implants to have bigger and fuller breasts. The procedure helps improve the size and shape of the breasts. While many women go under the knife for personal reasons, but they are not exactly fully aware what it is all about and what kinds of risks and repercussions are involved.

Types of Implants

Implants are of two kinds – Saline and Silicone.

Silicone implants are basically silicone-made shells which have gel inside them. Saline implants, as the name suggests, contain salt-water.

Today, more women are in favor of getting silicone implants as they are believed to be more durable and provide a much better view and feel akin to real breasts.

The Aftermath

After the surgery has concluded, you will be discharged from the hospital in a day or two. The doctors will advise you against lifting heavy things for several weeks – up to six weeks. Post surgery you may feel some pain or swelling in the breast-area, it is normal.

The scars and pain will disappear over time. However, if the pain persists for longer, seek the doctor’s advice. Also you will be required to wear a surgical bra.

Taking Care

Breast implants do not last a lifetime. Still, they need to be taken care of. And in all likelihood, the implants will change their size and shape over time. So it’s a good idea to get them replaced after a couple of years or so. In case of a rupture, a removal or replacement is necessary. Women who get implants should also bear in mind that they may experience difficulty in breastfeeding, and may also run the risk of getting breast cancer.
