The problem lies in the detail. There exists a lot of misunderstanding as far as forklift capacity ratings go. Forklift operators, owners and astonishingly forklift sales personnel also do not understand this concept clearly.

Forklift Safety and Capacity Ratings

Safety is of prime importance in any kind of work. This includes the safety of the working human and the safety of the machines. Many a times the machines in question are expensive to buy and hence safety becomes the prime thought while buying such machines. Forklift is one such machine.

They carry around heavy loads and make your life easy to some extent. Because of their practical use in nearly all industries, fork lift sales have always been on a high. Now a knowledgeable person will always ask a very important question before purchasing a forklift. What is the capacity rating on this forklift?

Gross chassis capacity

There are 2 main kinds of capacity ratings – gross chassis capacity and the net chassis capacity. A gross chassis capacity refers to the maximum capacity that a specific forklift can achieve in ideal conditions.

There are several factors that come into play while talking about an ideal condition. In an ideal condition, the side shift is not attached, the load would be closer to the ground, solid rubber tyres would be used instead of air filed tyres, and a two stage mast would be used instead of three stage mast.

As far as forklift sales are concerned, it is mandatory that you never use it to evaluate the forklift’s lifting capacity. You should only use it as a measure to compare forklift brands among each other. Considering the gross chassis capacity to determine its lifting capacity is incorrect since forklifts are never actually configured this way.
